Hull’s historic Beverley Gate protected by ‘Scheduled Monument’ status

ONE of Hull’s most historic monuments has been crowned an archaeological site of national significance by the Department for Culture Media.

On advice from Historic England the Government announced this afternoon protection over Beverley Gate, where King Charles I was refused entry into Hull in 1642, widely regarded as the spark causing the outbreak of the Civil War.

It has now been identified as a Scheduled Monument, meaning it has better protection from future development. Roman remains, burial mounds, castles, bridges, remains of deserted village and industrial sites are among those granted such status.
